I thought it would be good to celebrate this and update people on how it’s going.
The initial idea and drive came from Kamalagita when she was Centre chair – diolch o galon Kamalagita, we shall always be grateful for how she took the initiative and with energy and determination made it happen.
Then the baton was passed to mainly 3 of us – Anantamani (based in Llangollen) Miriam Lynn (Anantamani’s daughter, based in Cambridge) and myself. Miriam is currently on the ordination retreat in Spain and received the name of Jnanapadma, just last week.
Jnanapadma is a truly wonderful Dharma practitioner. Her qualities include showing a genuinely felt care and kindness for each group member, regular and new. She has an open heart that is able to hear and really see the people she meets. This is accompanied by her sparkling intelligence – which she uses to great effect when helping us to organise. I am grateful that she is also a fluent Welsh speaker, and is therefore able to share the task of leading the group. We are all really looking forward to her return, probably early in July.
Anantamani has been an order member for many, many years and is a stalwart of the Llangollen group and her experience and sense of joy brings a special quality to the evenings.
I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Liam Davies for taking over the fortnightly task of sending out reminders to people and sharing the login details. Despite Jnanapadma and myself not being available for over 2 months, the meetings continued and thrived – diolch o galon Liam.
Currently somewhere between six to eight participants join the group. Most are regulars, however we continue to be blessed by new faces. They can join from near and far, an average of 4 of us from Cardiff and others from Sheffield, Pwllheli and Pontardawe. In the first 2 years we had a regular participant from Montreal!
I really want to stress that although having a reasonable understanding of Welsh is vital in order to benefit from the evenings, there are no expectations whatsoever about the standard of Welsh required. If you can follow, then please join – and join in the brief discussions only if you want to. One of our participants at present is a new speaker ( this is the current preferred term for ‘Learner.’ If you think about it, one rarely refers to an English “learner” – only someone who is new to the language). Some people have joined us briefly for only a couple of nights, some join us once in a while and of course that’s all perfectly OK, all are welcome. We’d be very grateful if Sangha members could share this update with any Welsh speakers they know. Please remind people that the login details are readily available on the Cardiff Buddhist Centre website.
The format usually involves a brief Dharma talk, followed by 2 or 3 sits with short breaks. We follow the Triratna tradition of consciously ensuring equal time for mindfulness focused and metta focused guidance. Recently I have led a few visualisations including a Buddhanusati. Occasionally I have introduced examples from Welsh poetry that chime with dharmic values and vision. (e.g. R. Williams-Parry, Waldo Williams) The other recent trend is that we have been using our new Welsh translations of the Triratna puja book, for instance the refuges and precepts and the transference of merit. Ideas about future initiatives include organising a Welsh language retreat, for example Tirylan House near Llandeilo. I’ve noticed that we occasionally refer to ourselves as “ y Sangha bach Cymraeg” ( small Welsh language sangha) and the feeling behind this is really not one of separation at all, but a warm appreciation of what we share and our enjoyment of the language, an appreciation of this unique context in which to practise the Dharma and how it links us with the myriad languages of the world that are used to pass on the eternal teachings.

A Festive Mandala

http://www.llangollenbuddhistcentre.com/blog/a-festive-mandala

http://www.llangollenbuddhistcentre.com/blog/a-festive-mandala#comments

Uncategorized

Thursday 11th Dec.Amita "showed and shared" his Xmas card that he and his wife Judith had made as a collaborative piece. On arriving, he paid homage to our shrine and made an offering of a khata - traditional blessing scarf. This khata was blessed by Kachen Stanba and his students in Tashi Lhunpo monastery. Moksanita opened the gathering and we all saluted the shrine in call and response. She then accepted a framed portrait of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama on behalf of us all. It had been blessed during the Dalai Lama’s six-week long stay at Kachen Stanba’s monastery Tashi Lhunpo in South India.
This was ceremoniously added to the shrine. We all heard how Kachen Stanba had been called to the Dharma by the sight of peaceful monks when he was 10 years old and had asked his family for permission to join a monastery. We were treated to a lively and moving account of his journey aged 10 from Ladakh to south India, a distance of some 2000 miles, by various modes of transport: car, bus and train. We heard of the Geshe Lharampa training he received over a period of 24 years, and the rigorous day to day schedule of pujas, intensive study, memorising text, meditation and debate. For those of us practising within Triratna it was a precious opportunity to learn about Dharma practice in the Gelug tradition and the importance of rigorous study and mind training and the place of debate amongst monks as a means of maintaining mindfulness and clarifying conceptual understanding. After a tea break, Vidyamani led a Metta Bhavana meditation and before ending, we expressed our gratitude to our visitors for their generous gifts, material and spiritual. We wish them health and success in sharing the Dharma through their journeying and teachings.

An ever widening circle

http://www.llangollenbuddhistcentre.com/blog/an-ever-widening-circle

http://www.llangollenbuddhistcentre.com/blog/an-ever-widening-circle#comments

Uncategorized

On Saturday 28th June at Sychdyn there was celebration in the air. It was a moment to appreciate the skill and commitment of those who have made it possible for Welsh speakers to celebrate pujas in their first language. Being able to do this, as Anantamani said, was like coming home.
Themes of interconnection, friendship, and the growing sangha continued with the Mitra ceremony.
Moksanita and Amita, welcomed Zoe and Phil respectively, as new Mitras. It is always an inspiring and uplifting occasion and there was much rejoicing in their qualities and heartfelt well-wishing.
Triratna is a truly international movement with the precepts translated into 42 languages. Lively small group discussion focussed among other things, on experiences of and feelings towards ritual. There was reflection on what opens our hearts to the sacred in the seemingly ordinary.
The gathering ended with a sevenfold puja with Sakyamuni mantra, during which offerings were made to the shrine. By the close of the puja the shrine was adorned with items of personal significance added by each woman, creating a wonderful sense of community and shared devotion.

24th May - Buddha Day Celebration

http://www.llangollenbuddhistcentre.com/blog/24th-may-buddha-day-celebration

http://www.llangollenbuddhistcentre.com/blog/24th-may-buddha-day-celebration#comments

Uncategorized

On this day we held our Buddha Day celebration with a joyful recollection of some stories from the life of the Buddha. Although this was a sad time, it was also a time for gratitude and rejoicing in all he had done to make the Dharma accessible to us in contemporary western culture. His funeral at Adhisthana was a great event characterised by deep gratitude and those of us from Llangollen who attended had a clear sense of the strength of the Order and its ability to carry on the work of spreading the Dharma.

In Llangollen, the Story Sharing event on October 12th was a happy occasion and a chance to get to know the Story Telling group, the Llangollen Refugee Support group and other people of goodwill in the town. The event raised nearly £250 for CEFN, the North Wales Refugee charity, and Berni and Caron from CEFN came and talked about their work with refugees, particularly in Greece. We also heard some great stories, and shared some lovely food!

On Thursdays we have been following a series on the Bodhisattva Path and the qualities to be cultivated in our own lives - generosity, ethics, energy, patience, mindfulness and wisdom. We had a special ceremony in November to welcome Deniz as a new Mitra, and in December we celebrated sangha and spiritual friendship and particularly thanked Padmasara for all she has done to keep the Llangollen group going and to help so many of us on our spiritual path through teaching and friendship. She is planning to move away from the area soon and will be much missed.
We have also had good news that Sion who has been part of our Llangollen sangha for many years has been invited for ordination next year (2019).
